Make-up artists use make-up to ensure
that people looks good and beautiful, presenters or guests look natural on the
television screen, create special effects such as wounds and ageing and create
the correct appearance for actors such as a clown or a dirty old man.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Make-up artists are always present on the sets of theatre productions and during the filming of movies or television programmes. Their task is to see to it that the actors' and presenters' hair and make-up are done correctly and touched up when necessary. They are also responsible for wigs, whiskers and special effects. Make-up artists can specialize in more than one field such as model make-up, old-age make-up, fantasy make-up etc.
Make-up artist’s work closely with directors, costume and lighting designers. They must do thorough research to ensure that actors' hair and make-up represent the period depicted in the film or production. When special effects are needed, especially where futuristic or mythological stories are portrayed, make-up artists must use their imagination.
Make-up artists first analyze the faces of their clients, before they start applying the makeup. They take into consideration the shape, bone structure, eye shape and complexion of the clients.
Make-up artists mostly work indoors in well-lit studios. Make-up sessions can be very time-consuming, especially when special effects have to be created, and make-up artists have to stand on their feet for long periods. It can be expected of them to work any time of the day or night.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Make-up artists must be artistically inclined and must possess a well-developed sense of colour and form. Imagination, initiative and originality are important qualities. Manual dexterity is essential. Because make-up artists work with people, friendliness, patience and tact are very important qualities they must possess.
Make-up artists must also be adaptable to long and irregular working hours. They must be dedicated to their job and keen to learn and experiment with original and creative ideas.
